Lakeview Regional Medical Center is proud to announce it has been re-certified as a GIFT (Guided Infant Feeding Techniques) certified facility by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals – Office of Public Health – Bureau of Family and the Louisiana Perinatal Commission. The GIFT is a tool for the hospital staff to enhance the breastfeeding services and promote breastfeeding as the normal and preferred method of infant feeding.

As a result of successfully meeting The Gift’s criteria as documented in the “Ten Steps to a Healthy, Breastfed Baby,” Lakeview Regional will receive a Golden Gift Breastfeeding Award. “We are proud to participate in The Gift initiative and continue to provide support and education for breastfeeding mothers, which helps to improve the overall health of mothers and babies in our community,” states Melissa Sheridan, RNC, IBCLC-RLC. Breastfeeding support opportunities at Lakeview Regional range from mother friendly prenatal care and supportive labor and delivery services to postpartum and postnatal care that facilitates bonding and optimal infant feeding. Healthcare workers trained in counseling skills support mothers before and after birth.

Each August breastfeeding is celebrated with World Breastfeeding Week. This year’s theme is Breastfeeding Support Close to Mothers. It encourages a circle of support including family, social networks, healthcare systems, government/legislation, workplace and employment, and response to crisis or emergencies, and how these areas influence and support the mother in her breastfeeding experience. In addition to utilizing the GIFT in Labor and Delivery, Lakeview Regional Medical Center offers breastfeeding classes every other month for new mothers and those experienced mothers looking for a refresher course. The La Leche League breastfeeding support group, previously hosted at Lakeview Regional, is currently not active. To register for the next scheduled breasfeeding class on September 7th, call 985-867-3900.
