Lakeview Regional Medical Center is proud to announce the addition of Dr. George J. Smith, MD, a physician practicing Interventional Cardiology and specializing in coronary and peripheral interventions. He has 26 years of clinical and interventional cardiology experience, including experience with two cardiac transplant centers. Dr. Smith trained with the originator of thrombolytic therapy in acute myocardial infarction in New York City, and pioneered the development of coronary directional, rotational and laser atherectomy, as well as coronary and peripheral stenting in the Mid-South.

The 5th annual Boo Fest will be held on the grounds of Lakeview Regional Medical Center on Saturday, October 25th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event benefits and serves children with disabilities and their families, but is open to children of all abilities. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. for special needs families. The main gate opens at 10 a.m. and admission is only $1.

Lakeview Regional Medical Center is the first and only hospital on the Northshore to perform robotic assisted gastric sleeve surgery. On June 6, 2014, Dr. Ruary O’Connell completed three robotic assisted sleeve gastrectomies. The gastric sleeve procedure is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 25% of its original size by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature.

Patients can now view their allergies, conditions, discharge summaries, hospital visit histories, lab results, medications, medication instructions, lab results, radiology reports and upcoming appointments from anywhere with internet access. Patients can also download and print this information so it is readily available for scheduled appointments, referral visits or when supporting a loved one’s care.

Lymphedema is one of the most poorly understood, relatively underestimated, and least researched complications of cancer or its treatment. Lymphedema has been reported to occur within days and up to 30 years after treatment for breast cancer. Eighty percent of patients experience onset within 3 years of surgery; the remainder develop edema at a rate of 1% per year. Lakeview has a Certified Lymphedema Therapist that offers treatment for upper and lower extremity swelling. Since there is no cure for lymphedema, the goal of treatment is to reduce the swelling and to maintain the reduction. The treatment involves Manual Lymph Drainage, Graduated Compression Garments, Therapeutic Exercises, Meticulous Skin Care and Patient education on all Manual Lymph Drainage and exercises.

As severe weather conditions approach our area, our Emergency Department remains open and staff and physicians are being housed at the hospital in order to provide continuous care.
Surgeries at Lakeview Regional Medical Center are operating today, Tuesday, January 28. We will reassess the situation and share additional information on Wednesday, January 29. Patients should contact our scheduling department at 985-867-4019 for information on rescheduling.
All clinics are closed with the exception of our Florida Street location. Mandeville Medical Care will remain open on Tuesday, January 28 until 12 noon.

Dr. Gary Agena, a surgeon specializing in gynecology and obstetrics, successfully performed a minimally invasive, single site (single incision) robotic hysterectomy at Lakeview Regional in December.
